For the most part, being a good professional athlete means being in good shape. Sure, there are linebackers in the NFL and a few MLB pitchers like CC Sabathia who have found success while lugging around some excess pounds, but these examples are few and far between. Most athletes manage to keep their physique in check during their playing days, and some even continue maintaining that machine after they hang up their uniform.
On the other hand, plenty of athletes let themselves go after retirement, and that’s somewhat understandable. Going from a lifetime of constant movement and endless exercise to a much more sedentary lifestyle is an abrupt change, and it isn’t easy to stay in peak physical condition - even if guys like Michael Jordan, Herschel Walker, and Jerry Rice make it look that way.
Even worse, some players start this downward trend toward the end, in the middle, or even at the beginning of their careers. If it happens near the twilight of their tenure, age can be blamed. If it happens at the beginning, maybe it’s because they just signed a long-term contract and are taking things a bit too easy, or are overestimating their level of job security.
For our part, we don’t really care when the weight gain took place. Athletes have the education and experience to take care of themselves even more so than us mere mortals, and expecting them to stay in shape in not asking too much - even if many players fail at it. Whether they play one of the “big four” sports, compete in the olympics, or box in the ring, here are 10 superstar athletes who let themselves go.
