Due to GSP being unwilling to fight before November, his clash with Michael Bisping has been cancelled. Surprisingly, this was celebrated by fans, who felt that GSP didn’t deserve the middleweight title shot in the first place. UFC President Dana White has recently confirmed that when GSP next steps foot in the Octagon, it will be for the welterweight belt. We don’t know who will be welterweight champion come fight time – but we do know that the welterweight division is stacked.
Right now welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is in a tough spot. He was off to a rough start after defeating Robbie Lawler in a rather anti-climactic finish. Events since then have left many doubting his legitimacy as champion. A clash with the greatest welterweight of all time could certainly change this.
Although we have no idea if Woodley will even be champion come fight time, Welterweight is a snake pit of competition, and it has changed dramatically since GSP’s hey day. Norwegian sensation Gunnar Nelson has tapped his opponent’s left right and centre, and he’s not the only grappler either. The terrifying Demian Maia has travelled down to welterweight and has proceeded to dominate everyone he’s fought, save for GSP’s team mate Rory MacDonald. The walking spoiler that is Rick Story is also readily available and has the unique ability to kill the hype of nearly any prospect. There is also the man who defeated Story, Donald Cerrone, as well as Jorge Masvidal, who recently beat The Cowboy himself.
If none of those sound good? There’s always a promising money fight with the Notorious Conor McGregor.
